For your first visit it is important that you not wear makeup, cologne, scented deodorants, or heavily scented soaps. Please bring the names and phone numbers of your primary care physician and other health care practitioners you are seeing, and bring a list of the medications, herbs and supplements that you are taking.
Before the first treatment, Dr. Foley will take a full health history and perform a focused physical exam. You will generally receive your first treatment following this exam. Sterile, disposable needles are used. Acupuncture needles have smooth points and are hair thin. These are not like needles used for injections or drawing blood samples.
Moxa, an herb in the mugwort family, is often used to warm the points prior to needle insertion. The needles are generally inserted just under the skin. When the needle is inserted into the skin there may be a brief sensation of tingling, heaviness or numbness. For some kinds of treatments the needles are inserted and removed immediately, for others the needles are left in place for a while, but generally less than 30 minutes.
During the treatment many patients feel relaxed. After the treatment, patients describe feeling renewed and refreshed, energized, or calm.
The first session lasts about one and one-half to two hours. Follow-up sessions last 45 minutes to an hour.
Dr. Foley accepts cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, and debit cards. Dr. Foley does not bill insurers directly, but she can give you a “superbill” which you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
